The 9th All Japan High School English Presentation Contest

On Sunday, October 31st, the 9th “All Japan High School English Presentation Contest” sponsored by Dokkyo University’s Faculty of Foreign Languages Departments of Tourism and Transnational Studies and English was held. During the summer, 119 high school students from 44 high schools from around Japan submitted slides and audio recordings for one of the three topics – “2020: A lost year?”, “No Time Like the Present”, and “’Eureka!’ A Moment of Discovery”. Screenings of the presentations occurred during July, and seven finalists were chosen to participate in the final round to be held in October.
Unlike other years, due to the concern of the spread of the new corona virus or COVID-19 throughout Japan, this year’s final presentations were conducted on-line in a ZOOM format with viewing open to participants, their families, and their high schools’ faculty and staff. As the way in which the presentations were to be conducted was changed, the final presentation contest was held two-weeks later than previously scheduled on October 31st. Thanks to the help of their schools, families and friends, the finalists were all able to successfully record their presentations for the on-line format, and the final presentations were streamed on-line for viewing on October 31st.
Though this year’s contest was quite different from the previous contests, the participants were successful in sharing their ideas and showing their presentation skills in English to their peers and listening audience. Furthermore, the skill sets that they were able to develop for participation in the on-line format this year will no doubt be skills they will use in their future educational and professional pursuits.
We would like to take this opportunity to thank all the participants, their families and the teachers and staff that helped the students prepare for Dokkyo University’s “All Japan High School English Presentation Contest”. Your participation and your support helped to make this year’s contest a success, and each of you should be congratulated for your fine efforts. We here at the Faculty of Foreign Languages look forward to meeting more high school students at future English contests and events held at Dokkyo University in the future.
